Pound foolish on worth of penny
As I read about the Winnipeg Free Press Pennies from Heaven campaign, and hear about the pennies collection by the Sunday school in my church, to help the less fortunate in our community, I cannot help thinking about the intelligence, maturity, and humanity of our federal members of Parliament, and especially MP Pat Martin of the federal NDP, who vigorously promoted getting rid of the one-cent coin because it had no value to him, cost the government too much to make, and was a nuisance or burden to carry around.
All charities and the businesses know the value of the penny. Gasoline companies sell gasoline in tenth of a cent. Stocks and money exchanges are sold at rates in one hundredth of a cent. The Free Press Pennies from Heaven campaign and our church Sunday school will gladly accept pennies, our one-cent coins.
If our members of Parliament are so focused on costs, I wish to bring to their attention that I see them as having no value, cost too much, and are a nuisance to have around. How many "puppets" do we really need to govern this country? It is time to start cutting their numbers and how much they cost.
I challenge them to redeem themselves, by donating, and persuading their one-cent/penny elimination supporters to donate their penny and coin burdens to the Pennies from Heaven campaigns.
