Your Oct. 2 editorial cartoon reinforces the fossil-fuel industry's propaganda global warming has stopped. In fact, global warming from carbon dioxide buildup in the atmosphere has not stopped or slowed down.
Scientists have found 93 per cent of Earth's excess heat, accumulating at the rate of four Hiroshima atom bomb explosions per second, is going into the oceans. For the past 15 years, the Pacific Ocean has been predominantly in the La Nina phase of its oscillation. La Nina tends to transport heat from the ocean's surface to the deep layers, thus cooling the atmosphere; El Nino does the opposite.
The last strong El Nino was in 1998, which not coincidentally was the warmest year on record up to that point, until eclipsed by 2005 and 2010. Global-warming deniers like to cherry-pick 1998 as the start year to prove there has been no warming since then, but this is deceptive.
Unless someone changes the laws of physics, the heat building up in the deep sea will sooner or later come back to bite us.
