Your Dec. 15 editorial, Hydro forecasts unravel, claims that the allure of clean energy has dissipated and that countries around the world are reverting to coal. This view isn't supported by recent forecasts by two of the world's pre-eminent energy agencies.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Energy Information Administration issued an early release of its 2013 Annual Energy Outlook. The EIA projects that renewable fuel use in the U.S. will grow at a much faster rate than fossil fuel use and that coal, as a portion of total U.S energy use, will decline slightly to 19 per cent in 2040 from 20 per cent in 2011.

In contrast, renewable energy is expected to increase its share to 16 per cent in 2040 from 13 per cent in 2011.

In November, the International Energy Agency released its World Energy Outlook 2012. The IEA forecasts that on a worldwide basis renewable energy will become the second-largest source of power generation by 2015 and by 2035 will approach coal as the primary source of global electricity.
