Letter of the Day

Riding for our glory

As laudable and popular a selection as Olympic gold and silver triathlete Simon Whitfield is to be Canada's flag-bearer at this year's London Olympics (Whitfield will be proud carrier of Maple Leaf, July 13), perhaps the more deserving (and sentimental) choice would have been equestrian Ian Millar.

The year 2012 will mark the silver medalist's record-setting 10th Olympiad (No. 11 if not for the 1980 Moscow Olympics boycott). Holding the maple leaf seems just reward for his dedication and ability to hold onto the Canadian reins for so long.

I doubt whether we'll see another 65-year-old with such competitive spirit and unrivalled endurance come our way again soon.
