Re: A pathetic response (Letters, March 20). It is misleading in the extreme to claim that there is no scientific reason to accept the claims of climate campaigners and to state that scientists are not "virtually unanimous" in their support of the alarm.
The reality is that an overwhelming number of climate scientists accept that the climate is changing, that this change is caused mostly by human activities, and it poses serious risks to current and future generations that need to be addressed.
The National Academies of Science from 13 countries, including not only Canada, but also the U.S., Russia, China, Japan, India, Germany, U.K., France, Italy, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa, have signed a joint declaration calling on world leaders to limit the threat of climate change. There are numerous surveys of individual scientists that demonstrate the consensus among climate experts.
For example, a survey by the University of Illinois at Chicago found that among scientists who list climate change as their area of expertise and have published a majority of recent peer-reviewed papers on the subject, a total of 96.2 per cent agree that global warming is occurring and 97.4 per cent agree that human activity is a significant contributing factor.
