Letter of the Day

Serving the patients' interests

  • Print

Re: Budget devotes millions to boosting nurse numbers (April 23). My wife was in three different hospitals for different periods of time over the past three years. The last time was for almost 10 months straight. During this period, I regularly saw nurses changing adult diapers, feeding patients because they could not feed themselves, bringing glasses of water to patients, etc. In some cases, the patients had to wait unacceptably long times for these tasks to be done.

I think the patients' interests would be better served by hiring more orderlies and support staff and letting the nurses do their nursing.

I mentioned this to several hospital staff, and they told me they agreed. I am sure that support staff can be hired for a lot less money than nurses, and this is not meant to belittle them for the important work they do in the health-care system.
