Letter of the Day

Single rider more efficient

I agree with Peter Miller's take on gas taxes (Manitoba drivers get free ride on gas tax, Feb. 17), but have been thinking over his belief in the efficiency of public transportation as opposed to private vehicle use.

Public transport is inarguably an efficient method for moving people, but only during a narrow time window, which mainly consists of morning and afternoon rush hours when buses are packed. At other times, a bus is moving over a fixed route with, from my casual observations, a handful of passengers.

Moving a 10-tonne vehicle for hours a day with a 200- to 300-horsepower engine and 10 or 15 passengers aboard is not the epitome of efficiency to my mind. I believe my 140-horsepower Honda, transporting one passenger (myself), is more efficient, as I only operate it for my 20-minute trip to work and back, with occasional forays for groceries and other assorted errands. I keep my idling time to a minimum and shut off the engine while waiting to enter the car wash and for trains to pass.
