Solace amid the gloom

It is hard to find things about which we can be positive when reading the daily news. Between the dismal performance by the Bombers, the destruction of the planet, and what seems to be a loss of a moral compass (in no particular order), I find some solace in the fact that we, as Canadians, are not so jaded that we believe the behaviour of some of our appointed senators is acceptable.

Pamela Wallin has been quoted as saying that the recent audit of the expenses she claimed as part of her duties as a senator was "unfair." Apparently the regulations for making those claims are unclear. Must we plug every loophole and ensure that every regulation defines every contingency?

While I am in favour of ensuring there is no ambiguity in instructions for the expenditure of tax dollars, I am also in favour of holding to the expectation that someone, in what should be a highly respected position, is actually ethically above reproach and knows the difference between right and wrong without having someone watching every move to ensure they are not raiding the public purse. Mike Duffy's behaviour has been even more abominable but his could be the subject of another whole comment.

I hope Canadians continue to raise their voices and their expectations that our public representatives be held to account.
