Letter of the Day

Starving for the truth

It's more than a little ironic that the UN's Olivier De Schutter should be criticizing Canada's food insecurity when, according to the UN itself, malnutrition rates here have been stabilized at five per cent since 1992, and Statistics Canada claims our food insecurity rate has fallen from 9.2 per cent in 2004 to 7.7 per cent in 2008.

Equally ironic is the fact that while Christian aid organization World Vision finds that two-thirds of the world's hungry live in only seven nations, including supposedly booming China and India, the UN is sending envoys on cross-Canada tours to chastise us on food-supply policies and consumption habits.

De Schutter is affiliated with the UN Human Rights Council, which contains some of the world's most repressive regimes. In fact, The Economist magazine's democracy index ranks Russia, China, Congo, Cuba and Saudi Arabia between Nos. 117 and 161, while Canada is No. 8.

Yet De Schutter is serving as a mouthpiece for the effete argument that if there's widespread Third World hunger, the West is to blame for it, and Canada should increase its $5.2 billion in development aid.
