Terry Fox still inspires

  • Print

Re: Manitoba tribute for a Canadian icon (July 31). In Brandon, on Sept. 13, 1981, I did my little bit -- all 83.45 minutes of it -- for the first Terry Fox Run.

When I compare that, little as it was, with Terry Fox's 5,373-kilometre run across Canada in 143 days, I take consolation -- it was my modest tribute to a truly great Canadian.

My heart is always stirred with wonder when I see that iconic photo of Fox, with what looks like a tortured and painful expression on his face, determinedly running on.

Good for the government in its proposed legislation to honour our Manitoban son. It will do us all good to be reminded of his incredible feat of physical and mental endurance.

What a pity Terry died so young -- he would have proved, I am sure, to be an even greater Canadian no matter what he did had he lived on.
