Re: Budget expected to tackle OAS woes (Feb. 3). Canadians have spent much time and effort screaming "We want to be heard," "We want to be consulted" and "We are sick of governments ramming through willy-nilly changes suggested by the latest special interest groups." At least that's what I heard before the last election.

So here we are now with a majority government that has the audacity to suggest that Canadians be consulted on the health of the pension system and discuss whether changes are in order for it to survive and help those who need it.

Slap me silly, but isn't this what Canadians were asking for?

But apparently this is something that cannot and will not be tolerated by the opposition parties who have their shorts in a twist because they can scare the heck out of seniors. Opposition MPs should hang their heads in shame for doing so and put on their big-boy pants and sit down at the table and work together.

I am looking forward to the battle the Conservative government will be facing over its plan to raise the age of eligibility for OAS from 65 to 67. Baby boomers have provided all governments with a rich source of income. They have had many opportunities to fortify, strengthen and improve the public pension plans for the benefit of future generations, which include the baby boomers.

What an insult to this particular segment of our population. After all, they have contributed to this country and its economy. All the generations to follow will also pay the price of poor management of the pension system. I sure wish Jack Layton was here to battle this current government over this misguided idea.
