I agree totally with your Oct. 30 editorial Apply brakes to MPI and with the letters, Premium misuse, in the same edition.
For years Manitoba Public Insurance has hailed the success of their immobilizer installation program as the main cause for reducing vehicle thefts. Drunk driving and failure to wear seatbelts are mentioned by MPI and police forces as two major causes of accidents, maimings and deaths.
Rather than putting ratepayers' money into road infrastructure, MPI should invest in a program to install vehicle immobilizers that function when the driver's blood-alcohol level is over .05 and when seatbelts are not properly fastened.
If the technology is weak or non-existent, then MPI can invest in research and development for both of these. At least the purpose and long-term outcomes would be visibly focused on infractions and claims that are frequent and costly and would still fall under Marilyn McLaren's stated objective "to improve safety and reduce accidents."
