Trucking has made strides
The Manitoba Trucking Association has a couple of concerns with the May 25 article City seen as ideal rail hub for Canada, Mexico trade. The statement that rail is a more environmentally friendly form of transport is based on the old system of comparing tonnes of freight moved per kilometre. This simple metric sways in favour of rail. There is no comparison or consideration of the value of goods moved per kilometre.
Further, no consideration is given to the great strides the trucking industry has made in the area of reducing greenhouse emissions. This is an area where rail has seen little improvement.

Today's trucks do not have pollutant emissions, while rail engines do. Long haul trucks today tend to be no more than three to five years old on average. Rail engines in service can be 30 years old. Trucks use ultra-low sulphur fuel. Rail does not. Great investments are being made in the trucking industry so we can reduce our carbon footprint. Rail has yet to make the same investment.
Finally, what new infrastructure investment is required for rail to properly service its customers, and what environmental impact will this have? The trucking infrastructure is already in place to move freight quickly and efficiently.
This infrastructure is required to move all freight in general, perishable products in particular. Trucking has this infrastructure; rail does not. This infrastructure also serves to meet the just-in-time demands of today's customers, an area where trucking almost invariably excels in comparison to rail.
