I was dismayed to read David Connors' Feb. 11 One to Watch on the Queen. Connors, like many other uninformed people today, believes that Queen Elizabeth should "retire" from her "job" in favour of Prince Charles, who is now 63.

What Connors overlooks is that the position of monarch of the United Kingdom is not a job. During the coronation ceremony, which has taken place for the past 900 years in Westminster Abbey, the monarch is solemnly anointed and consecrated. The promises made are for life, and our venerated Queen has, throughout her entire life, taken her vows most seriously.

She is not, as Connors says, competing with Queen Victoria for the longest reign in history. Rather, she is fulfilling the solemn vows taken at her coronation in June 1953. Long live the Queen.
