Waking up the electorate

Re: MrJetzTV's candidacy casts doubt on rules (Aug. 21). In the provincial election in 2011, voter turnout was pathetic: 56 per cent. Byelections are more dismal for turnout. In Concordia, 2010, it was 31 per cent. Elmwood and The Pas, 2009: 36 per cent and 30 per cent respectively.

Since the Fort Whyte byelection is on a Tuesday following a long weekend, it is fair to say few MLAs took this seriously, until now perhaps. If Darrell Ackman's candidacy is worth anything, it has injected some media caffeine into the sleepy electorate.

It is truly a sad state of affairs in our democracy when the main motivation for reporting on a byelection is an accused sexual exploiter.
