Win-lose takeover
Re: Ex looks to take over the Downs (Jan. 30). It looks like what could have been a win-win situation now has the potential to be win-lose, with some hard feelings to boot.
I have no doubt the Red River Exhibition Association's CEO has a good idea. Of course the minister of Finance supports it; anything that will get the NDP out of its financial chasm is welcomed with open arms. What I can't figure out is why RREA didn't approach the owners of the Downs, the Manitoba Jockey Club, before going public. To me, it would be common courtesy and just good sense to have let club in on the plan first.
I obviously don't get how business is now done in the 21st Century.

I can not believe that our NDP government would be involved in getting the Red River Exhibition Association to take over the Assiniboia Downs without first telling the Manitoba Jockey Club. It is so disgusting.
The NDP just wants to railroad the Downs. They want to waste over $1 billion on Bipole III. But $10 million is too much for the Downs?
The NDP has done nothing to help the Downs over the years. This has been coming for a long time. I attend the races. There are lots of people in attendance and they are not all old. You cannot get a reservation for race day without planning ahead. The day of the derby has had great attendance and there is so much excitement.
Finance Minister Stan Struthers says you have to think of the provincial economy. Really? I think if it is $10 million then it is money well spent. I find it hard to take our government seriously when $1 billion is peanuts but $10 million is a problem.
