In their Nov. 17 column, UN must step in to protect Syrians, Lloyd Axworthy and Allan Rock seem to want us to believe that the war against Libya was conducted with the intent of "protecting civilians." The Libya we "liberated" was, according to the WHO and UNESCO data, providing to its citizens free health care and free education.
Libya had a high standard of living, one of the best in Africa. NATO, using the most advanced ordinance, including uranium-coated ammunition, destroyed all of that. But then again, war is good for business, as demonstrated by British Defence Secretary Philip Hammond, who urged British companies to pack their suitcases and head for Libya because there was money to be made in its reconstruction.
The rebels now fighting in Syria are presented as "liberators." The central role of al-Qaida-affiliated terrorists within the rebel ranks is not mentioned.
Is Axworthy aware of what is going in Bani Walid? Atrocities are still being committed against Libyans who wanted no part in seeing their sovereign country "liberated" by thugs. Where is NATO with its slogan of "responsibility to protect"? Is using Libya as a model the kind of protection Axworthy and Rock envision for the Syrians?
