Big honour at banquet for Habing
Volleyball setter Brittany Habing named female athlete of the year
University of Manitoba volleyball setter Brittany Habing has a women’s volleyball resume a mile long, but despite that, being named the Bison Sports Female Athlete of the Year was a complete shock.
"I had no idea it was coming," the 21-year-old said of the award handed out at the annual Brown and Gold Banquet Sat., March 29. "Not at all."
Habing said she was honoured to receive the award, and credits it to her team’s success all year, including winning the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Championships March 2.
"My team is to thank for the award because without them I wouldn’t have been named," the faculty of science student said. "It’s pretty cool and I’m very thankful to them for that."
In addition to court volleyball, Habing has a passion for beach volleyball. This past summer, Habing and partner Chloe Reimer, trained up to five times a week preparing for the 2013 Canada Games in Sherbrooke, Que., where they placed fourth.
"It’s probably something I enjoy more than court volleyball, but given that we live in Winnipeg it’s not exactly a year-round sport," Habing said. "I wish though."
As for Habing’s future in volleyball, she is committed to keeping it fun. She has two more years of eligibility until she will finishes her science and nursing degree, and after that she wants to focus on her career.
At the banquet, Habing’s coach, Ken Bentley, was named Coach of the Year, and running back Anthony Coombs was named Male Athlete of the Year. Rookie Athletes of the Year included Rebekah Sass (track and field) and co-male winners Andre Arruda (basketball) and Adam DeJonckheere (volleyball).
