It is with great delight that I write to share with you exciting news of a recent announcement that our government will be building a new school the Riverbend area.
This new kindergarten to Grade 5 French immersion school will be a welcome addition to the community and to the greater West St. Paul area. I was pleased to join our Premier Greg Selinger and other local leaders on Nov. 20 at École Belmont for the official announcement.
This is a wonderful example of our government focusing on what matters most to Manitoba families. This new school will help our children get the attention they need, because we know children get off to a strong start and are more successful when they have more one-on-one time with their teachers. In partnership with school divisions, we have added over 200 teachers and reduced large classes by over 40% through our smaller classes initiative.
We are focused on strengthening our education system, health care, building roads and bridges, and investing in skills training to create good jobs to keep our economy growing. This new school in the Riverbend area will also include a child care centre with 54 preschool and 12 infant children spots, which gives working families better access to the support they need. This new school will help ensure a high quality of education for our children. As an added bonus, the construction of this new school will create the equivalent of one year of employment for 169 people. There are so many benefits to investing in our communities.
With these exciting announcements, such as this new school in the Riverbend area and the addition to the Garden City Community Centre, our community will only become stronger. West Kildonan Collegiate is also another prime example of this in our constituency. This recently opened school uses an innovative approach by working with the local community when building the school. Furthermore, the key design objectives were to create small learning communities, an active student commons/multi-purpose room space, gymnasium teaching stations, a state of the art home economics/family studies program and an integrated daycare program.
We are building and expanding new schools to meet the needs of growing communities in Manitoba. Construction of a new kindergarten to Grade 8 school in Amber Trails is well underway. Since 1999, our government has invested over $1 billion to build or replace over 30 schools and to renovate classrooms, gyms and science labs.
