Nuit Blanche is all set to take over city
Nuit Blanche is a free, all-night exploration and celebration of contemporary art.
The concept of inviting people out to a special night of cultural and artistic activities originated in France in 1984, and the first Nuit Blanche in Winnipeg was held in 2010. It’s caught on quickly, too, as lineups at the Winnipeg Art Gallery and other Nuit Blanche venues have become regular occurrences on the last Saturday of September or the first Saturday of October.
The 2013 edition of Nuit Blanche Winnipeg is Sat., Sept. 28, and it will feature a whopping 63 events centred on three main areas in the city: downtown (including the Winnipeg Art Gallery and Plug-In ICA, the Exchange District and St. Boniface.
In Winnipeg, Nuit Blanche is also part of the national Culture Days celebrations taking place across the country between Sept. 27 and 29.
While we don’t have space to list all Nuit Blanche events here, we can tell you that the Winnipeg Art Gallery has always been one of the local hubs — drawing up to 5,000 people — and this year will be no different.
Doors to this year’s party open at 6 p.m., Saturday, and festivities won’t wind down until 4 a.m. Sunday.
The program proper will begin at 6:45 p.m. with the public opening of Storm and Spirit: The Eckhardt-Gramatté Collection of German Expressionist Art, after which there will be events, performances and music all over the gallery.
Some of these will be:
A premiere by Jolene Bailie (Gearshifting Performance Works) of a new piece; audio/visual performances and collaborations by Toxic Prophecy; a DJ set by local spinmaster Mama Cutsworth from midnight to 2 a.m.; a live music set by The XanadOOds, and plenty more.
Perhaps the most interesting proposition will see artist Dean Baldwin reconstruct the Greek Parthenon from salvaged materials on the WAG’s rooftop. The finished piece will be on view between 2 and 4 a.m.
