What better way is there to spend a sunny Saturday afternoon in July than by supporting the U14 Magic AA Ringette team by getting your car washed?
That’s what many motorists and ringette fans had the chance to do on Saturday, July 20 at Kendel’s Esso on McLeod Avenue. The team, along with coaches and many family members, were on hand to get a little dirty and to raise funds for their upcoming ringette season. Armed with buckets, sponges, signs and, of course, lots of giggles, the group was ready to shine some cars.
The day began bright and early at 9 a.m. and the flow of dirty vehicles did not stop until 2 in the afternoon. The stream of cars was constant throughout the day and at many times the lineup was five cars deep. Sponges and soap were flying all day long and the girls earned every penny donated to their team.
The girls, their parents and coaches not only washed every car that drove up but also flagged down passing cars with their signs and shouts. Not many could pass up the opportunity to have their cars washed by such an enthusiastic group. Young and old alike were happy to support the cause, with many donating much more than the $5 fee. The team even had to wash a semi-truck but was well rewarded for its effort.
The team washed approximately 100 cars and trucks throughout the day and earned over $800 but they got so much more than money out of the experience. They built new friendships and cemented old ones and they learned a bit about team work off the ice.
After a tough day washing they celebrated at a team barbecue. What a great head start to the 2013-2014 ringette season and what a great experience.
A special thanks goes out to Kendel Esso for providing the space as well as many of the essentials that helped make the day such a success.
