Winter a great time to get active, stay fit
Keeping active during the winter months can be a challenge for most parents. Cold weather and fewer recreational events during these next few months tend to drive parents and children alike indoors.
Not to worry, there is hope! You can keep your family active during the winter months: All you need is protective clothing and few great ideas.
In preparation for the months ahead, it’s good to do your research about what events are available. Local papers (such as the one you are now reading) often have a community billboard section outlining upcoming events.
Another good resource is Destination Winnipeg (www.destinationwinnipeg.ca) for a list of activities in your area. Create a calendar and record the dates of some of the more child-friendly events.
Taking the family pet for a walk around the block is a good opportunity to get some much-needed fresh air and exercise. Dress warm and wear multiple layers that can be removed if you begin to overheat. Remember, it is always better to be overdressed than underdressed when it comes to cold weather. Also, for longer walks, don’t forget to bring some water for you and the kids as it is still possible to dehydrate during the winter months.
Other outdoor winter activities, such as ice skating and sledding, can provide enough variation to keep your children active and excited this winter. Skating lessons are available at many local community centres, for those who have yet to learn. Also, let’s not forget about all the wonderful snow! Building forts and making snowmen are classic ways to keep your kids busy and fit this winter.
Of course, the best way for parents to stay healthy and active this winter is to get outside and play with their kids. Rediscovering ice skating (with some practice if necessary), hitting the hills for some sledding and building igloos are all activities that moms and dads can participate in. Who cares what the neighbours will think when they see you?
