Headingley’s newest restaurant is quickly becoming a favourite among area residents because of its eclectic cuisine.
Headingley resident Anna Luinenburg came across the Roadhouse Eatery by chance, but now that she has tasted what Manitoba’s only South Indian-style restaurant has to offer, she knows there is no going back.
"It is so great because most restaurants in the RM serve things like hamburgers, hot dogs and pizza," she said. "When I walked in I was so happy to smell chicken curry."
The restaurant was officially opened on Aug. 1 by the husband and wife team of Manoj Kumar and Ambily Manoj at 5540 Portage Ave., formerly Bob’s Steakhouse and Lounge.
Kumar and Ambily said that Headingley has proven to be a perfect location for their restaurant venture, because most area businesses only offer Western fare.
"The community has really taken a shine to us," Kumar said. "And we are grateful for the support."
In addition to the chicken curry, the Roadhouse Eatery’s menu includes other South Indian delicacies such as beef coconut fry and chicken biryani. But wife Ambily boasts that it is really her husband’s attention to detail that makes the food at their restaurant unique.
"He actually makes all his own spices, which are quite a bit different than those found in North Indian restaurants that are already here in the province."
But the duo, which currently resides in Charleswood with their three children, isn’t interested in pigeonholing themselves to just one style of fare. Quesadillas, Bangkok stir-fry, penne Greek, falafel, Mediterranean bruschetta, and even burgers are among some of the other dishes Kumar cooks up.
"We really wanted to make this a place where everyone could have a good meal," Kumar said. "And of course it is all very fresh."
It is this wide variety of menu options that made Luinenberg decide to spend New Year’s Eve at the Roadhouse, a decision that she definitely does not regret.
"You wouldn’t believe the food there that night," she recalled. "They had stuffed lobster tail, tandoori chicken, fresh wild Pacific salmon, buttered chicken and so much more — it was crazy."
The whole thing was rounded off by a live performance by a local jazz band, Luinenberg said.
She added that she was so impressed by the event that she and her friends have started going there every Saturday night as a convenient place to meet up.
This is exactly what Kumar and Ambily like to hear from their customers, and both said they are so thankful for the support their venture has received.
"I just need to thank everyone in Headingley for all their support," Ambily said. "It has really been overwhelming to see so many people from around here brining their friends in to try our food."
