MP Candice Bergen (Portage-Lisgar) had a red-letter day on July 15 as she was appointed to cabinet as Minister of State (Social Development).
"It’s a brand-new position," she said, adding she’s honoured to accept the portfolio that will see her working with Jason Kenney, Minister of Employment and Social Development.
Bergen, who was first elected in 2008, said she has in the past chaired a federal committee on human resources and social development, and that experience will help in her new role.
"I’m really looking forward to digging in," she said.
Although her new position will include cross-country travel, she said her constituency is still her top priority, but added that she will depend on her office staff to help keep her up-to-date on local issues.
She recently put about 1,000 kilometres on her odometer during one weekend as she drove throughout Portage-Lisgar.
"I’ll just keep putting on the kilometres," she joked.
