CancerCare fundraiser takes first step

Residents of the Fannystelle and Elie areas are invited to join in a CancerCare Manitoba fundraiser on Sun., Oct. 14.

This is the first Tammi Kroeker Memorial: Run, Walk or Ride event, said organizer Brent Dyck. He is a family friend of the Kroekers, and wants to honor the young mother of three from Fannystelle who died of breast cancer earlier this year.

Dyck regularly competes in half-marathons that raise money for various charities, and realized that the approximately 20 kilometres along Highway 248 between Fannystelle and Elie is equivalent to a half-marathon distance. That gave him the idea for the memorial fundraising event.

"I thought it would be nice to do something like that to remember her," he said.

While runners are welcome to test their endurance, Dyck said he wants everyone to consider participating. "You can skip; you can jog; you can ride your bike."

Participants will begin in Fannystelle at 9 a.m. and are expected to finish at the Elie Community Club before 2 p.m. where they can also enjoy a potluck barbecue.

For more information and to register, call Dyck at 204-509-0781 or email at dyckb@ggc.com.
