Cartier adds new resource coordinator
Karla Tkachyk, the new resource coordinator for the Cartier Senior Support Committee, wants to fill her calendar with activities.
"Besides the usual weekly activities, my support coordinator and I are planning fun and exciting events starting in February, such as monthly birthday cake, routine shopping trips to Winnipeg, and we are hoping to have two fundraisers a month, such as an old-time dance and a luncheon," she said.
The committee’s previous activities, like whist on Mondays, will continue. Tkachyk said she is also hoping to start up a bi-weekly card bingo game in St. Eustache on Wednesdays, floor shuffle on Thursdays and nickel bingo on Fridays. A daily five-course supper for $6 is served at the Elie Manor along with a five-course lunch served at the St. Eustache Manor on Wednesdays.
"I strongly encourage anyone in the area over the age of 55 to join us whenever they can," Tkachyk said. "My understanding of aging is simple — a physically and mentally active body at any age will treat you better than a lazy one!"
An Elm Creek resident, Tkachyk recently completed her advanced undergraduate psychology degree at the University of Manitoba. She said her new position will definitely allow her to learn from local seniors and to give back to them with the resources available.
Activity and menu calendars are posted in Elie, St. Eustache and St. Frances Xavier. For more information, contact Tkachyk on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays or Fridays at 204-353-2470.
