Cassy Regier, 17, knows the coaching staff at Sanford Collegiate is the main reason the school produces so many elite athletes.
A Sanford Collegiate athlete is convinced quality coaching is the main reason the high school produces so many elite athletes.
Cassy Regier, a 17 year-old Grade 12 student at the collegiate, participates in numerous school sports and has garnered a number of accolades during her four years at the school. Not only is Regier part of the varsity volleyball team, she also plays varsity basketball, varsity badminton and coaches Grade 7 and 8 basketball.
During her time at the collegiate her accolades have included junior varsity athlete of the year and being part of the provincial championship junior varsity basketball team in her Grade 10 year.
In her Grade 11 year, she placed third in the provincial badminton doubles championship, and received the zone banner in cross-country. This year she has already received graduating all-star honours and was named MVP at the St. James Basketball Tournament held last month.
Regier says while the accolades are nice, the school’s coaching staff deserves a lot of credit for the success she has enjoyed.
"The coaching staff’s dedication to actually coaching makes all the difference for those of us involved in sports here," she says. "They make time throughout the day for us to practice the sports we are in."
Regier said that it is common for athletes at the school to be at the gym by 7 a.m. every morning to work on their skills before class. Many return after class to do more work.
While Regier believes the coaching staff is the reason for producing great athletes at the school, coach Kelli Sinnoch says hard-working students like Regier make their job easy.
"On every team that Cassy has been on she has played a huge role on each team," Regier says. "She has natural abilities, is a very hard worker and she just does everything with dedication with lots of natural skill. She is one of those kids that other coaches notice."
