Comic book heroes come to life in Starbuck
For decades, children have enjoyed reading about their comic book heroes and daydreamed about them coming to life.
The Kids Community Theatre will bring these daydreams to life with its performance of Adventures of a Comic Book Artist. The musical will be staged in Starbuck, but director Valerie Jowett said some of the young performers, ranging in age from six to 13, come communities other than Starbuck.
The production gives children who are interested in acting and singing in public the chance to display their talents.
"They often don’t have the chance to do that in schools anymore," she said.
Alyssa Houde, from St. Francois Xavier, who plays action heroine Wombat Woman, is already an experienced performer at 11 years as this is her fifth production.
"I like that you’re able to be someone you’re not," she said.
Dana Jonasson, of Baie St. Paul, shares Houde’s enthusiasm for performing. "I just love acting and singing."
She plays comic character Triple Time as well as a few other roles.
At age 10, Tristen Kalusny is a novice actor, but he said he’s not nervous about being on stage in front of his family and friends.
Jowett said although almost all of her spare time since December has been devoted to rehearsals, she loves the young actors’ energy.
Crystal Joachum is the production’s musical director and Christine House helped Jowett with casting the musical. Auditions were held in November so the women could get a sense of the number of children interested and where their talents lay. After that, she read over many scripts to select the one she felt would work best.
The musical tells the tale of a would-be comic book artist whose drawings come to life and help him battle some nasty supervillians. Jowett’s 11-year-old son Ben stars as the hero, artist Stanley Leonardo Sappovitz.
Jowett hopes that local residents will support the theatre company. She said Starbuck Credit Union made a donation.
Adventures of a Comic Book Artist is being performed on April 13 at 7 p.m. and April 14 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $5 and available at Dawn Til Dusk in Starbuck or by calling Jowett at 204-735-3139.
