Connecting with Headingley parents
Feeding baby, changing diapers and taking care of a host of other household chores often prevent the caregivers of young children from getting out of the house to socialize.
The organizer of a new playgroup that will soon be launched in Headingley is hoping to change all that.
Time for Kids to Konnect will provide parents and caregivers with an opportunity to get together at the Headingley Library’s main floor on Wed., Nov. 7 and Nov. 14 from 2 to 3 p.m. Children of all ages will be welcome to attend the sessions, which will provide music and games. Admission will be free.
Dawna Atamanchuk, mother of a 21-month-old son, is organizing the group. A Headingley resident for 12 years, she said living in a rural community can make it difficult for people to find a place where they can bring children and spend time with other parents and caregivers.
"There must be other caregivers like me in the area," said Atamanchuk, whose son isn’t enrolled in daycare. "The group is for men, women, grandparents and any other caregivers."
The Macdonald-Headingley Recreation District currently offers a Baby Rhyme Time class in Headingley.
Atamanchuk said the new playgroup won’t be competing with the Baby Rhyme class. Instead, it will offer an informal opportunity for caregivers to meet.
With Headingley’s growing population, she said, there is room for additional programs aimed at caregivers of young children.
Atamanchuk said she isn’t yet sure how many people will attend the initial session scheduled for Nov. 7.
"We’ll see how old the kids are and find out what activities will work," she said, adding she is looking forward to meeting more people in the community.
Atamanchuk said hopes to offer the playgroup twice a month to begin with.
