A Headingley girl is urging municipal officials to consider providing some form of public transit for residents of the rural municipality.
Melanie Blackmore,14, said many young adults in the RM are often stranded because of a lack of public transportation in the community.
Blackmore said adding some type of bus service would be supported by young people and their parents.
"For young people in the area we spend a lot of time in the city and it is not always easy to get our parents to drive us to where we need to go," she explained.
Blackmore said that she needs to travel to Winnipeg almost daily to attend dance class and it’s often difficult to find a ride.
"It would just be a lot more convenient if we had a bus route here," she said.
Blackmore recently presented her concerns to council and urged members to consider establishing a limited bus service for area residents.
Reeve Wilf Taillieu said council members will consider Blackmore’s request, but added that providing a bus service in the community might be prohibitive.
"Before we even consider establishing a route in the community, I would need to see how much usage it would get," he said.
"And then we would need to see if local companies would take the contract or broker a deal with the city to extend one of the exiting routes into the area."
Taillieu said council will consider the request, adding he is not sure how soon a decision will be made.
"It’s really great to see young people in our community taking an interest in the RM," he said of the recent request.
Blackmore said she is confident a bus service would get a lot of use, especially with the development of a Bridge Road seniors complex that is currently under construction in Headingley.
"I know there is a seniors development on its way in Headingley, and some of those seniors may also need busing," she added. "I just think it would be much more convenient for everyone who lives here if there was some sort of public transit."
Blackmore added that even limited service would be better than no service at all.
"Even if there is just one or two stops in the area it would be great," Blackmore said.
