Dig out your old lamps, bikes and books for the Elie Community Club’s community garage sale and auction on June 8.
Residents can hold their own garage sales and pay $3 to be listed on the town map or rent a table in the community centre for $10. The sale will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
You can also place items in the auction that starts at 2:30 p.m. with viewing at 2, and pay a 10% commission.
The community map and auction sale list will be available at the community centre on June 8 or at Elie Store on the June 7.
Community club president Nickole Bernardin said money raised will be divided between the roof replacement fund and community activities.
The community garage sale and auction is the latest fundraising event that she and the other club executive members have organized to bring in the $4,000 needed to make repairs to the roof above the section of the community club used for the nursery school program. Last year they held a harvest festival, breakfast with Santa and, in January, a talent show.
Bernardin reported that about $22,000 has been raised. The total estimate for repairs and renovations to the entire building is $100,000.
"The fundraising for our roof is going very slow as we are doing it penny by penny," Bernardin said.
"We have applied for multiple grants for assistance, and will keep searching under every stone until we can find the help we need to get the building fixed."
The club has not received any grants to date.
"It sure would be nice if we could get it done this year, as our nursery school kids, daycare kids, as well as the community as a whole, deserves a safe and healthy environment to learn and play in," she said.
