Fundraiser back for second year
Friends and family of Tammi Kroeker are determined to remember her by fundraising for
The young mother of three and Fannystelle resident passed away in early 2012 after a battle with breast cancer. To honour her memory, the first annual Tammi Kroeker Memorial: Run, Walk or Ride was held on Oct. 14, 2012, with about 60 participants travelling approximately 20 kilometres on Highway 248 from Fannystelle to Elie.
Organizer Brent Dyck, a family friend of the Kroekers, said this year’s event will be held on Sept. 22 and will start in Fannystelle at 9 a.m. The walk/run ends at the Elie Community Club with a lunch.
"Our main goal is awareness," said Dyck, but participants can raise pledges before the event or make a pledge when they complete it. Last year, more than $1,800 was raised for CancerCare Manitoba.
"We’re hoping to surpass that amount this year," he said.
Dyck said everyone is welcome to join in whether they run, walk, cycle or ride on horseback.
There will be checkpoints set up at five-kilometre intervals so participants don’t have to complete the entire distance.
"It’s their choice. We’re very flexible," he said.
While there are many charity runs and walks in Winnipeg, Dyck and the other organizers wanted to hold an event close to their homes and to where Kroeker herself lived.
For more information, call Dyck at 204-509-0781.
