Generous small town spirit helps family
The Talbot family hasn’t had to cook dinner for almost a month thanks to the generosity of their La Salle neighbours.
Wanda Talbot, who is recovering after recent surgery to treat breast cancer, said she’s grateful for the meals delivered to the family’s home.
"They arranged meals for almost three full weeks — hot, ready-to-serve."
This is the second time Wanda has been diagnosed with breast cancer. She went through surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapies less than two years ago. Earlier this year, an MRI revealed a tumour on her other side.
She knows how the effects of cancer can impact a family, as she lost her mother to breast cancer when she was young. Because of this personal experience, she’s determined to maintain a normal family life for her daughters, ages 12 and 14.
She and husband Aime are thankful that they made the decision to move from Winnipeg to La Salle in 2002. Both grew up in Manitou, Man. and wanted to give their children the same opportunity to live in a small community.
"We were high school sweethearts," laughed Wanda.
After moving to La Salle, Wanda continued to work as a nurse in the surgical unit at Victoria Hospital, while Aime operated his company, Custom Edge Construction, from a workshop on their property. Last September they bought vacant land on La Salle’s main street and built a three-unit building. One unit houses the Talbots’ business, with a store-front area for customers and a workshop for cabinet-making and wood-working in the rear. The new workshop provides plenty of space for him and six employees.
Aime said one of the other two units is rented to a local company and he hopes another tradesperson will rent the last unit.
"The best thing about running a business in La Salle is the lower cost," he said. Even though most of his customers are located in Winnipeg, transportation costs aren’t very high.
