Handmade pieces make special gifts
Receiving a unique, handmade item this holiday season is sure to make a loved one smile.
You can shop for this type of one-of-a-kind gift at the upcoming Headingley Arts and Craft Sale on Oct. 18 and 19 and the St. François Xavier Recreation Association’s craft sale on Nov. 23.
This is the seventh year for the Headingley show, which features 32 vendors. Macdonald-Headingley Recreation District director Susanne Moore said organizers try to give priority to local crafters. There’s a lot of interest in the show, but no room for more vendors.
She said they also try to ensure there’s a good variety of merchandise available, although it can be difficult as people follow certain craft trends.
Woodcarver Fred Gross, from Warren, is coming back for his third year at the show.
"I really enjoy this particular craft show," he said, adding that the Headingley Community Centre is a modern, well-lit facility.
Gross carves what he calls "wood wizards" into cottonwood bark, and uses pine and basswood for his other work. His prices range from $5 for a wooden fridge magnet to about $60 for a large carving.
Proceeds from the Headingley sale go to Headingley Senior Services, which offers programs for local residents aged 55 and over.
Amber Gallant is signing up vendors for the St.
François Xavier sale and said it looks like over 30 vendors will be filling tables in the SFX Recreation Centre. Money raised through the sale will be used to support a newly-constructed outdoor rink.
Local crafter Wanda Cramer is busy knitting and crocheting hats, slippers and sewing hot pads and fridge towels for her booth at the sale. After a break of a few years, she said she’s glad that the sale is back on.
"I’m hoping that it does well," she said.
Admission to the Headingley sale is $2 and $1 for the SFX sale. Both will feature homemade lunch items for sale.
Hours for the Headingley sale are from noon to 8 p.m. on Fri., Oct. 18 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. The SFX sale will be open on the Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
