CentrePort president and CEO Diane Gray is a contender for one of this year’s YMCA/YWCA Women of Distinction awards.
Gray is nominated in the Leadership and Management category, with the winners to be announced May 1.
Gray was provincial deputy minister of finance when she was selected to head CentrePort in 2009.
One of her nominators, World Trade Centre Winnipeg president and CEO Mariette Mulaire, said she knows the odds of a woman being picked for the prestigious job were slim, and Gray’s appointment is a testament to her experience and skills.
"She’s dealing in very much of a man’s world," said Mulaire.
Jim Carr, president and CEO of the Business Council of Manitoba, expressed support for Gray’s nomination for the Y award, calling her a "first-rate community leader".
Mulaire, who counts Gray as a business contact and friend, said not everyone realizes that Gray is the mother of four children, and has to balance career demands with her family life.
"She understands the balance between being a business professional and a mother," said Mulaire. "She somehow finds a way to make it happen."
