Highway improvements slated for Headingley, SFX, Cartier
Improvements to three intersections along the Trans-Canada Highway in Headingley and paving work in the RMs of St. Francois Xavier and Cartier are on Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation’s schedule for the next five years.
On Feb. 10, Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation Steve Ashton announced highway projects totalling $213 million which are expected to generate the equivalent of one year’s work for 2,400 people.
While much of the resurfacing work due to begin this summer will be done on the highway west of Portage la Prairie to the Saskatchewan border, drivers travelling through Headingley will see work underway at the lighted intersection at John Blumberg Golf Course. This work began last summer and includes construction of a service road on the north side of the highway.
Ron Weatherburn, executive director for construction and maintenance for Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation, said improvements, including a new median, will be made to the lighted intersection at Camp Manitou Road.
"This will look very similar to what we’ve done (at other intersections)," he said.
The third intersection to be worked on is close to the Headingley scales at PR 334 (Dodds Road), but Weatherburn said the design hasn’t been confirmed yet due to businesses being located next to the highway.
"We’ll have to meet with the RM to decide what to do."
The other projects announced are:
• Six kilometres of paving of the east and westbound lanes, including shoulders from PTH 26 in SFX to Gaol Road in Headingley.
• 16 kilometres of paving of the east and westbound lanes, including shoulders from PR 248 in Cartier to PTH 26 in SFX.
• 18.8 kilometres of paving of the east and westbound lanes, including shoulders from PTH 13 to PR 248 in Cartier.
• Structure rehabilitation on the westbound lanes at Assiniboine River, 0.8 kilometres west of PTH 26 in SFX.
