Kiersten McLeod is one of the nominees for this year’s YMCA/YWCA Women of Distinction awards.
A La Salle resident, McLeod is in the running for the Gerri Hammond Memorial Award of Promise, a $2,000 scholarship that is given to a Grade 12 student enrolled in a Winnipeg high school.
McLeod attends Vincent Massey Collegiate where she’s in the school band and a member of the Reach for the Top team. She and other students recently helped build a girls’ high school in Kenya after fundraising for the community.
She also volunteers with Teen Talk, a youth health education program, and participates in presentations for middle school students on issues such as bullying.
Erica McNabb, her supervisor at Teen Talk, nominated McLeod for her commitment as a volunteer with the organization.
"She’s a pretty integral part of the group," McNabb said.
A synchronized swimmer with the Aquatica Synchro Club, McLeod also coaches swimmers aged six to 14.
"I like to pass on what I’m passionate about," she said.
She plans to attend the University of Manitoba after graduation and study education or law.
The Woman of Distinction awards will be given out on May 1.
