Lost Animals agency is helping lost dogs reunite with owners
St. Francois Xavier residents have spotted a pair of lost dogs, but the co-ordinator of Brandon and Area Lost Animals is asking people not to approach the animals.
"One of the biggest mistakes people make is to chase or pursue a lost animal," said Toni Gramiak. "They are lost, scared and will bolt from people and possibly from the area. Often they bolt into traffic. We want to keep them safe and keep them in the area to arrange their capture."
She believes it’s possible that the dogs sighted could be Max and Sasha, a boxer-shepherd mixed pair that went missing about four months ago. Their owner moved them from Arden to a property close to Rapid City, Man. in early December, and the dogs went missing shortly afterward. It’s believed they travelled east and there were sightings reported in the Portage la Prairie area in March.
Gramiak is excited about the recent sightings in St. Francois Xavier, however she wants local residents to use caution and help with the dogs’ rescue.
She asks that anyone who sees the dogs contact Brandon and Area Lost Animals. If possible, take a photo of the dogs so the animals can be identified and their physical condition assessed.
She added that Max might be the only dog in view because Sasha is timid and likely to hide from people.
Leaving small amounts of dog food in a safe location at the same time each day can help to lure the dogs, and possibly aid their safe capture.
"So many people think of lost dogs as stray. But often they are lost, scared dogs whose family is missing them and searching for them," said Gramiak.

Gramiak also suggests that people living in the Winnipeg area visit the Winnipeg Lost Dog and Lost Cat Alerts’ Facebook pages and ‘like’ them so they will get updates on new postings.
