Beer drinkers in Sanford have an added reason to raise their glass in celebration — they can now purchase their favourite domestic brand of suds without leaving town.
In August, the RM of Macdonald council approved a request by the MLCC to allow Sanford Lumber and Building Supplies to sell domestic beers. Under the Manitoba Liquor Control Act, the MLCC must seek municipal approval on applications involving the sale of spirits, beer and wine within the rural municipality.
Andrea Morann, who owns Sanford Lumber and Building Supplies, said she applied to the MLCC for permission to add domestic brands of beer to the outlet’s selection of liquor, wine and imported beer based on the requests of customers.
"I’m hoping that this increases the flow of traffic through the store," she said.
MLCC communications co-ordinator Susan Harrison said the sale of domestic beers is usually restricted to hotel vendors. However, there are no hotels in Sanford and the closest ones are located about 15 kilometers away in Brunkild and La Salle.
"We don’t want people to have to drive further than 10 kilometers in order to buy beer," she said.
Beer fans should note that the sale of their favourite brands will be limited to the store’s regular hours of operations. It closes weekdays at 8 p.m. and Saturdays at 6 p.m.
