National 'Searchlight' shining on Fannystelle musician
To her surprise and pleasure, harpist and vocalist Janelle Nadeau, originally from the Fannystelle area, is one of five finalists in the On the Coast region of CBC Radio’s Searchlight contest.
The national contest is divided into regions, with musicians from each region submitting their songs for public voting to choose which ones advance to the next level. As of March 8, the five finalists in each region were waiting to hear which one of them received the most votes needed to move into the next round of the competition.
Classically trained in the harp, Nadeau now lives in Vancouver, but says her heart remains with her family on their farm. She returns home each year to help with the harvest.
She said her sister Kara urged her to enter her song Leavin’ in the contest.
"I’ve really only started writing my own music a few years ago," said Nadeau. "It’s the little push I needed to share my music."
Even if she doesn’t win the big prize—being featured in a CBC Music video session, paid to perform at a high-profile music showcase in Toronto, and $20,000 in music equipment—Nadeau is happy she has progressed to this point.
