A ground-breaking ceremony to mark the start of construction of La Salle’s new community centre building is planned for the spring.
The community centre’s board of directors announced on Dec. 20 that the community centre building project was approved and the contract awarded to Thomas Design Builders Ltd.
"We are very pleased to finally bring this project closer to completion," said board president James Pollard.
"The current community centre has reached the end of its life cycle and needs replacement. The new facility (to be built where the outdoor hockey rink is now) will include a gymnasium, dressing rooms for indoor and outdoor sports, kitchen, multi‐purpose room and a fitness room," he said.
The project will cost $3.5 million and be funded by a $3.175 million tax debenture with $325,000 coming from other sources, according to board secretary Brian Cornelsen.
The existing facility will remain open until the new facility is completed later this year.
"The board is confident that the residents of La Salle and the surrounding area will find it a beautiful building that they will want to use often. We expect that this will be a place where people of all ages will gather and that the building will help contribute to the fact that our community continues to be a desirable place to live and raise a family in the foreseeable future," Pollard said.
