La Salle Community Centre’s new recreation director, Tom Cardinal, is working ahead — about six months ahead.
He’s developing a business plan and budget and planning the programs for the new facility that’s taking shape in La Salle next to the current centre.
Cardinal said construction is on schedule and the doors should be open in January. With this in mind, he plans to start taking bookings in October and is starting to promote the new centre.
The facility will have a capacity of approximately 800 people, making it the biggest facility of its type in the area. Cardinal said it will be similar to the Sunova Centre in West St. Paul, and he recently toured that facility.
"I’m quite excited about it," said Cardinal.
He’s also meeting with the groups that now use the current facility as well as local recreation associations to work out future programming.
He said that keeping the centre filled with people is necessary.
"It has to pay for itself," he said.
Cardinal brings 30 years of recreation experience to his new job, including positions at Winnipeg’s River Heights Community Centre, YM/YWCA of Winnipeg’s downtown branch, and mostly recently Southdale Community Centre.
He welcomes input from local residents and people interested in booking the facility. Tom can be reached at 204-736-2679 or firstname.lastname@example.org
