St. Francois Xavier residents are being asked for their opinions on the future of waste disposal in the area  following changes to the municipal waste bylaw.

According to information sent out by the municipality, there are  three choices available to municipal Council once the municipal dump is filled up.

They are: to convert it to a garbage transfer station; to expand the landfill by purchasing adjoining land; or to contract with one or more companies to pick up garbage at every house in the municipality.

All these options are more expensive than the current situation.

Effective April 1, area households and businesses will be limited to dumping three plastic garbage bags (maximum size 42 x 48 inches) per week. The bags are to contain household garbage only. Additional bags may be dumped at a cost of $1 per bag.  

All other items will not be allowed. Big items and truck or trailer loads may be taken to the City of Winnipeg’s Brady landfill. Information on the landfill may be found by calling 311 in Winnipeg or by going to www.winnipeg.ca.

Burnable material — unpainted wood, branches, dry leaves and cardboard — is still permitted in the burn pit.
