As the Assiniboine River’s flow increases, with the peak expected to arrive by noon on July 8, property owners and volunteers in St. Francois Xavier are building up dikes.
SFX CAO Robert Poirier said the weekend was spent building dikes to meet an anticipated river flow equal to that of the 2011 flood plus an extra 18 inches. Another foot is now being added.
"We’re adding another foot of freeboard," Poirier said on Monday morning.
Approximately 70 properties located next to the river are being protected.
Poirier said volunteers are needed and can contact the municipality’s Emergency Operations Centre at 204-864-2871.
