It’s the little touches that add to a town’s beauty and show that its residents take pride in their surroundings.
Thanks to the efforts of the Starbuck Improvement Committee’s members, bright new Canadian flags are flying and colourful flowers are growing in the community.
Val Jowett said pots for the flowers were purchased using a Community Places grant received two years ago. The flags were recently donated by a local resident.
When the committee was first formed, its members looked after maintenance of Wayside Park next to Highway 2. It’s one of the first things people see when they turn into town.
While the municipality of Macdonald now keeps the park’s grass mowed, Jowett said there are other projects, such as painting, that could be done. The trouble is there aren’t enough people interested at this point.
While she was responsible for planting this year’s flowers in the pots, she needs help with once-a-week watering.
"It would be nice to get more people involved, and to see what people want," she said, adding that an area next to the bridge across the La Salle River could be improved.
