Volunteers are needed for test drives, rink building

  • Print

Anyone with a valid driver’s licence and a hammer can lend a hand in St. Francois Xavier on Sept. 21.

Local community club members are holding a Raise the Rink event starting at 10 a.m. at the SFX Community Centre.

The event’s purpose is the construction of an outdoor hockey rink for local families to use this winter. Organizer Dwayne Clark said some materials from Virden’s old indoor rink were donated. The new outdoor rink will be built in the same spot where one has been located in the past.

"The lights are still there," he said, adding that anyone can join in the construction. He and his fellow community club members hope to get the rink built by the end of the day.

As well, Wilf’s Elie Ford is holding a fundraiser that day, offering to make a $20 donation toward the outdoor rink for every test drive taken by visitors. There will be four cars available at the SFX Community Centre and up to $6,000 can be raised.

Clark said the money will go toward the rink’s construction and maintenance. He’s confident local volunteers will step forward to help keep the rink properly flooded and cleared over the winter.
