Volunteers needed to help disabled children ride

  • Print

The Manitoba Riding for the Disabled Association (MRDA), a therapeutic horseback riding program for children with disabilities, is looking for volunteers to act as horse leaders or side walkers.

A mandatory volunteer orientation will be held on Sept. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at West Wind Stables near Oak Bluff. Volunteers must be 16 years or older and, although horse experience is necessary to be a leader, it is certainly not required to be a side walker.

MRDA executive director Peter A. Manastyrsky said the program couldn’t run without its many dedicated volunteers. About 100 volunteers are required for each session, with a leader and two side walkers assigned to each child as well as experienced instructors who organize lesson plans, help tack up the horses and assist the children in mounting them.

For more information please visit the association’s website at www.mrda.cc or phone 204-925-5905.
