Waiting for the call

Progressive Conservative Party candidate Shannon Martin is counting the days until a provincial byelection in Morris, and his tally stood at 225 as of Oct. 15.

Martin has been waiting for the NDP government to signal the start of a byelection since former Morris MLA Mavis Taillieu resigned her seat in the Legislature in February.

"I think we’re past the point of ridiculous," Martin said, arguing it’s not fair to Morris’ constituents, as they have had to go without a provincial government representative while waiting for a byelection to be called.

A byelection must be called within a year of a seat being vacated, so time is running out.

Martin said he feels he has made good use of the lead-up time by attending events across the constituency.

"It’s given me the opportunity to get out and meet people."

Liberal candidate Jeremy Barber couldn’t be reached for comment by press time.

No NDP candidate has been nominated for the Morris byelection.
