Winning gold at international tourney
Christine Bestland of Brunkild was thrilled when she and her teammates on Canada’s under-22 women’s hockey team defeated Russia 8-3 to bring home the gold at the Meco Cup on Jan. 6.
The Canadians beat Germany, Switzerland and Finland to enter the final round in the tournament held in Germany.
"All teams were very strong and aggressive, however Finland gave us a pretty good game and was our strongest game to make it to the finals," said Bestland, who currently plays hockey at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Penn.
Bestland said playing on the national women’s team will help her as an athlete by pushing her to compete to her full potential and allow her to experience the style of play of other countries. Her dream is to earn a spot on Canada’s senior women’s hockey team and compete in a Winter Olympics.
