Ward 2 trustee needed on Red River Valley SD's board

  • Print

Despite public advertising, the Ward 2 — Sanford-Brunkild trustee position is still open on the Red River Valley School Division’s board.

RRVSD superintendent Pauline Lafond-Bouchard said the previous Ward 2 trustee moved away and, under the provincial Public Schools Act, the division is required to seek a replacement through a byelection.

"We had no one come forward," she said. She and the other trustees then decided to call for applications for the position.

"We had no applicants," she said. However, they are now holding the position open until Feb. 7 in hopes of having someone who lives within the division apply.

Lafond-Bouchard said any resident can apply, and they aren’t required to have children attending public school.

"It can be anybody who lives in the school division," she said.

As well, the successful applicant will only have to sit on the board until school board elections are held in October.

"You’d only be committing for five months," Lafond-Bouchard said.

Tracy Holness is vice-chair on the RRVSD board and has served as a trustee for eight years. She encourages people to think about sending in an application because she feels being a school trustee is a great way to make a difference in your community.

"You can see how all the pieces come together," she said, adding that trustees provide direction for the division and participate in making annual budget decisions. They are also able to get to know the division’s school administrators and teachers and to represent the interests of their ward’s communities.

Monthly board meetings usually last about three hours and there are also two in-camera meetings held each month. Holness said the trustees sometimes meet during the day and meetings can be scheduled to accommodate their work and personal duties.

To apply for the Ward 2 trustee position, send your resume and the names and contact information of three references to RRVSD secretary-treasurer Alma Mitchell at amitchell@rrvsd.ca or call 204-746-2317 for information.
